Developing a relaxed attitude on disaster preparedness

Its fairly easy to develop a relaxed attitude about disaster preparedness. The government has been talking about the bird flu for years, people evacuate for hurricanes and nothing bad ever happens, during the cold war generations of children were taught about a nuclear attack that never happened. But all it takes is one time of not taking a disaster seriously, and bad things can happen.

An example of how bad things can get was Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ike. The citizens of New Orleans did not heed the calls to evacuate and people died.

The citizens of the Crystal Beach area in Texas did not take Hurricane Ike seriously. As a result, people died because of relaxed attitude.

In the spring of 1918 there was a minor outbreak of the flu. Who knew that the disease would mutate over the next few months and come back in the fall as a killer – also known as the Spanish Flu. An estimated 20 – 50 million people died in the following months.
